Steamboat Ok's Accessory Dwellings in RE-1 and RE-2

The City of Steamboat Springs gave approval on first reading last week to allow accessory dwellings, also called secondary units, in the RE-1 and RE-2 neighborhoods of Steamboat. These neighborhoods were the only remaining areas in the City that were not allowed to build accessory dwellings. The policy also has been expanded to allow property owners to build secondary units prior to primary residences, and allows bigger secondary units in size and height limitations. The approval came without much debate, and is expected to receive final approval at the June 21st Council meeting. According to city staff, REALTORS can begin marketing properties in the RE-1 and RE-2 neighborhoods as allowing secondary units by the end of June. SSBR had sent a letter of support for the issue because it gave property owners more flexibility with their properties, and will help to create more affordable house without deed restrictions.
